Private Kindergarten in Los Angeles, CA
At Chatsworth Hills Academy, our Kindergarten students acquire the skills they need to be successful in the future world. They learn to ask questions and inquire, research effectively, work collaboratively with others, communicate their findings, and think critically about what they’ve learned. Most importantly, CHA students develop into globally-minded thinkers who learn to appreciate different cultures and perspectives. We want our Kindergarten students to begin to think big and make connections to the larger world.
At CHA we believe that it is no longer enough to just learn information. Our Units of Inquiry provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge and skills in real-life situations. Kindergarteners become engaged in learning that is authentic, engaging, and fun.
- Building their own communities to meet the needs of all the members.
- Creating their own traditional celebration after studying celebrations and traditions of different cultures around the world
- Studying the attributes of heroes and bringing a chosen hero to life in a wax-museum.
- Becoming real-life weather reporters after exploring how weather affects people globally.
- Teaching guests how they can make healthy choices in their lives after the “Healthy Choices, Healthy Me” unit.
Our inquiry-based approach allows each student to pursue their interests and explore things that excite them personally.
Kindergarten students master their mathematical skills through a variety of hands-on experiences in data collection and recording, pattern recognition and creation, place value and number sense activities, and arithmetic computations from our Everyday Math program. Literacy skills are developed through our phonics-based Houghton Mifflin Journeys reading program. Working in small groups allows the classroom teacher to differentiate the instruction so that each child is challenged according to their ability level. Students also learn from each other through many collaborative projects and activities. Math and Reading activities are linked to the Units of Inquiry when possible.
In Kindergarten, the students also participate in a wide variety of specialist classes including P.E., Library, Technology, Art, Music, and Spanish. The specialist teachers regularly collaborate with the homeroom teacher to extend the classroom learning into their respective disciplines. The school-wide buddy program is another highlight of Kindergarten as the students get together with their older buddies several times throughout the year to share their learning.
Kindergarten at CHA is a wonderful balance of structure, play, and exploration in a nurturing and supportive environment. Our students leave Kindergarten as confident life-long learners, ready for the challenges of first grade and beyond.
