It’s not uncommon for children to be thrilled that summer is about to begin! From sleeping in late to lazy days without a solid school schedule, keeping your child excited about learning during their free time can sometimes be a challenge. As summer break doesn’t necessarily do wonders for your child’s learning skills, there are fast and effective ways to keep your child’s mind engaged and active through activities that don’t feel like school at all!
To help prevent the “summer slide,” our faculty at Chatsworth Hills Academy in San Fernando Valley, CA has put together a list of a few tips and tricks to keep your child learning all summer long, better preparing them for their journey back to school in the fall!
Get To Cooking
Whether you are baking muffins or whipping up a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies, baking recipes require step-by-step instructions that keep the mind strong and sharp. Not only will your child be able to practice their reading skills, but they will also be able to get creative with decorations and practice their mathematics. From accurate measurements, scales, and quantities, baking is an all-inclusive way to get your child’s mind firing on all cylinders, giving them a delicious reward in the end!
Reading may seem like an obvious way to keep your child’s mind engaged, but it’s easy to let a reading schedule fall by the wayside. Make sure to set aside time to take your child to their local library or bookstore, letting them browse the aisles to find topics they are thoroughly interested in. Whether it’s fiction or nonfiction, the act of reading will guarantee your child’s mind is focused and engaged. Encourage your son or daughter to read each night before bed, or while you are out running errands.
The Great Outdoors
As summertime usually coincides with great weather, getting outdoors and exploring will set your child’s mind on a path of adventure and wonder. Whether you ride bikes, hike trails, or go swim at the beach, spending quality time in nature will give your son or daughter the chance to think critically about their environment and the world around them. As an extra tip, it can be fun to set up scavenger hunts in your backyard or on a hike, as your child will be enthralled with finding different types of wildflowers, animals, or particular types of stones.
Buying your child a notebook that is both ruled and unruled will allow them to get creative in a multitude of ways! Encourage them to write down their thoughts right when they happen or draw pictures when they think of interesting ideas. Keeping a diary will help your child work on their handwriting, reading, and their creativity, keeping their minds occupied and working hard.
If your child is more interested in drawing than writing, have them set up a small art show in their bedroom or your living room, giving them the chance to explain what they drew and why they did it, thus allowing them to think critically about their imaginative choices and concepts.
