For many of our students at Chatsworth Hills Academy, summer camp at Camp Momonga is their absolute favorite time of the year! Located on 16-acres of beautiful native land in the San Fernando Valley, Camp Momonga is a truly unique experience that offers a plethora of fun, educational opportunities for all of our young campers.
Camp Momonga facilitates an environment where our students learn that to succeed, they must work together with their peers and their camp leaders! Whether they’re working to build a campfire, playing a game, or preparing a meal, our campers will learn that critical thinking and problem-solving will help them accomplish all of their goals! Through active teamwork, campers learn that they are each an integral part of the camp community, gaining a sense of acceptance and belonging within their individual camp programs.
A Brief History Of Camp Momonga
For up to 8,000 years prior to the arrival of the Spanish, the Chatsworth, CA area was inhabited by the Tongva-Fernandeño, Chumash-Venturaño, and Tataviam-Fernandeño tribes. The village of Momonga was located right next door to Chatsworth Hills Academy and was one of very few multilingual and multiracial settlements during its time. Members of the three tribes lived peacefully among one another, and sometimes even intermarried! The Momonga village is believed to have been regarded as a very sacred, ceremonial location, providing natives with both a sulfur and fresh water spring.
Today, Chatsworth Hills Academy students who visit Camp Momonga can study the intricacies of Momonga art spread across a number of sandstone boulders, and explore numerous rock outcrops with small caves! The history of Momonga is one that brings the tribes of the indigenous people together, and CHA aims to continue this tradition by bringing the young scholars of the world together through all of our programs at Camp Momonga!
Camp Momonga Programs
At Chatsworth Hills Academy, our camp director, Paulette Collins, works hard to provide a variety of different camp programs for all of our students!
- Explorer Camp – Our youngest campers, ages 2-4, will enjoy beautiful days filled with age-appropriate activities designed to allow them to experiment and explore! Led by CHA Early Childhood teachers in our self-contained preschool classrooms and playground, the preschool campers engage in swimming, water activities, arts & crafts, music, cooking, hiking, storytelling, gardening, animal care, and more!
- Discovery Camp – Designed for campers in 1st through 8th grade, our Discovery Camp program runs the last three weeks of summer, but creates memories that will last all year long! Programs will be offered for a variety of interests, giving campers the chance to discover or strengthen their interests in music, art, and STEM.
- Leadership Program – The Leadership Program provides our older campers (6th through 8th grade) with the opportunity to learn alongside an experienced teacher. These campers will develop leadership skills while leading small group activities, as well as strengthen interpersonal skills while working with campers of different ages. Each Leadership camper is assigned to a teacher for the entire week, assisting with transitions and camp activities throughout the day.
- International Camp – This camp is designed to be engaging for both native and non-native speakers of the English language. Our international program has been cleverly organized to make use of CHA’s Tribes Program, encouraging and promoting interaction between our American students and students from other countries. International students are exposed to American sports and playground games, traditional American root beer floats, and the beautiful terrain of the San Fernando Valley!
